#23-01: Team Building Workshop

Since 2016, over half of the Gardena Police Department managers and supervisors are new to their positions. Therefore, the Police Department is holding a state certified team building workshop with a certified outside facilitator to develop and improve the leadership skills of the Department's staff, establish clear expectations and enhance current programs. The workshop will empower employees through the development of leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills. Overall, it will help increase the wellness and growth of the department.

#22-01: State of the City 2022

The State of the City address is when the entire Gardena community is invited to hear from the Mayor about the City's accomplishments from the previous calendar year, as well as noteworthy upcoming projects or activities. A presentation is provided with highlights from every City department. All topics are addressed, such as crime stats, development projects, recreation programs, and more. It is an opportunity for the community to ask questions as well as rally together to ensure Gardena continues to be a great place to live, work and visit.


#22-02: Gardena Jazz Festival 2022

The Gardena Jazz Festival is a music festival bringing awareness and appreciation of live music to the residents of Gardena and surrounding communities. The 2022 Jazz Fest has approximately 8,000 attendees who have access to great local food, highlighting local businesses and the Gardena community.


#22-03: National Night Out 2022

This annual event enhances the relationship between residents, businesses and law enforcement while celebrating a true sense of community.

#19-01            Police Unity Tour


The Foundation supported eight police officers who rode in a memorial ride, in honor of fallen Gardena Officer Toshio Hirai.


#19-02            National Police Week


The Foundation provided funds to support the Chief of Police, Honor Guard, and Family Liaison to travel to Washington DC for National Police Week and the placement of Officer Toshio Hirai's name on the National Law Enforcement Memorial.

#18-01   Carlson CR5 Robotic Total Station

The Department needed to replace equipment that had reached its end of life. The station is a vital tool for analysis of traffic accidents, especially fatalities. The Department has a high conviction rate based on its reconstruction of accidents and the data derived from this technology.


#18-02  State of the City

The Foundation provided funds supporting the State of the City. At this event, residents and businesses had an opportunity to network with city staff and other residents and businesses, as well as learn about the current projects and financial status of the City, and learn about future plans for the City.


#18-03  National Night Out

Partnered with Gardena Police Department and Target to sponsor National Night Out. National Night Out join forces with thousands of communities nationwide to: (1) Heighten crime & drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support and participation in local anti-crime effort; (3) Strengthen neighborhood SPIRIT& Police community partnerships; (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized & fighting back through the partnership with the police and the community.


#18-04   12th Annual Employee Recognition Day

Sponsored Gardena Police Department's Annual Gardena Police Employee Recognition Day. This event is held every year to show appreciation for Gardena employees.


#18-05   Shop with a Cop and Needy Families Program

In partnership with the Gardena Police Department and Target, the Gardena Police Foundation sponsored Shop with a Cop, which provides a fun filled day for a number of children in need throughout Gardena while creating positive relationships with law enforcement. This unique December shopping experience assists children and can deter them from choosing a life of crime or violence. In addition, the Foundation supported the City of Gardena Needy Families Program, providing financial assistance during the holidays.

Provided funds for the Team Building Workshop. The Team Building Workshop allowed the Department supervisors and commanders an opportunity to strategize and coordinate the Departments goals and objectives for the upcoming years.
 
#16-02 Professional Grade SLR Camera
Purchased a professional grade camera for the Department. The Department will have an opportunity to ensure that professional quality photos are available to document the programs and activities of the Gardena Police Department, which can then be used to increase communication with the community utilizing all forms of communication, to include social media, website, and print communication.

Provided funds for managers and supervisors to attend training on Procedural Justice.
 
#15-02  Police Explorer Competition
This grant provided funds for the Gardena Police Explorers to compete in the annual Pasadena Explorer Competition.
 
#15-03    Body Worn Cameras
Purchased body worn cameras to be worn by Officers on patrol to record interactions with the public.

#14-01  Baker to Vegas Relay 2014
Funding to sponsor the Gardena Police Department Team's participation in the "Baker to Vegas" Challenge Cup, a 120-mile law enforcement relay race, designed to promote physical fitness and teamwork amongst officers and to create a stronger police force.


#14-02  Explorer Support
This grant provided a laptop and other requirements necessary to ensure a college-bound Explorer had the necessary resources as he continues his education.


#14-03  3rd Annual Community Business Forum
This grant assisted the Police Department to reach a targeted audience to discuss ways for businesses to protect themselves against fraud and other crimes.


#04-04  15-Passenger Van
This grant allowed the purchase of a used 15-passenger van that will allow the Department to more efficiently transport personnel for training, team building, and volunteer activities, among other things. The van will allow the Department to transport these personnel in one vehicle, reducing fuel costs and other expenses.


#14-05 Gardena Police Explorers Competition
Funded the opportunity for the Explorers to compete in a tactical competition held in Pasadena, CA.


#14-06 State Senate Trip to Portugal
Funded an opportunity for Chief Edward Medrano to interact directly with our state senators on an important public safety/social policy issue. Chief Medrano was the only Police Chief on the delegation and provided a local police executive perspective to the delegation.


#14-07  Training
Provided training and networking opportunities to enhance the Chief's proficiency in responding to emerging issues in law enforcement. Funded the travel cost associated with the attendance at the conference.
